Camden Mayor gives young leaders a taste of politics

A group of emerging leaders are gathering at Camden Town Hall for a special conversation with the Mayor of Camden and local councillors on Thursday 4 September.

The 30 university students at the ‘Hear our Pledge’ event are part of 3FF’s leadership programme ParliaMentors, which brings together aspiring leaders from different religious and cultural backgrounds to create real change across the country.

As the election year begins, Camden Mayor Lazzaro Pietragnoli will be sharing his insights on how to make a positive difference in the world of politics, and the students will have a chance to pitch ideas for social action projects to the Mayor and councillors. These projects will be carried out in the students’ university cities of London, Manchester, Nottingham and Birmingham, as they are mentored and supported by MPs.

ParliaMentors, which is run by 3FF in partnership with the British Council programme, Active Citizens, connects students of different beliefs to create a network of new leaders capable of bridging cultural divides. The 2014-15 programme launches with a special event in Westminster on Tuesday 2 September.

Mayor of Camden, Councillor Lazzaro Pietragnoli, said:

“I am delighted to host this event in Camden Town Hall. In a period when disenchantment with politics is very high, especially amongst the youngest generations, programs like ParliaMentors are a fantastic opportunity for students to engage and work with their peers from different backgrounds and cultures to be a force for social change in our community.”

“It is also a reminder for all politicians taking part in the program as mentors, that politics must always be a grass-root activity, and we have to support and promote the active involvement of local people in the decision-making process, no matter how difficult and challenging this might be.”

The event also celebrates the fact that 3FF, the Three Faiths Forum, is the Mayor of Camden’s chosen charity of the year. The Mayor, whose mayoral theme is the positive role faith communities play in Camden, will be supporting 3FF throughout 2014-15.
