“If you don’t believe in God aren’t you going to go to hell?”
“Why are Jews always trying to conquer Muslims?”
“Why do Muslims fast to be pure and then bomb people?”
The 3FF Schools Team deal with such questions every day in their work. Young people test boundaries and issues such as Israel/Palestine and the Middle East, generalisations about religious/non-religious groups, and religion and homosexuality are commonly brought up in our sessions in secondary schools.
We recently ran a training session about issues surrounding religion and terrorism together with Amnesty International UK to prepare teachers for questions that might come up in relation to the 9/11 anniversary. During the day the teachers learnt how to tackle a wide variety of controversial topics as well as how to debunk myths and enable pupils to critically evaluate information.
