Discussion on majority and minority faith relations

In celebration of National Interfaith Week, a panel discussion on “Majority and Minority Faith Relations in the UK” was held at the newly re-opened Jewish Museum in Camden Town. The speakers were Dilwar Hussein (Policy Centre at Islamic Foundation), Rabbi Dr Jonathan Romain (rabbi, writer and broadcaster), and Trevor Howard (Churches in Communities International).

The discussion dealt with the sociological realities of interfaith relations especially focusing on multiculturalism and integration challenges. The role of faith in the modern world and the need for faith communities to discuss social issues regarding gender equality, sexuality, secularism were highlighted.

The backdrop of the discussion was the exhibition of Jewish life in Morocco [link] – “Morocco: Photographs by Elias Harrus and Pauline Prior”, which was opened by Her Highness Princess Lalla Joumalla Alaoui, Moroccan Ambassador to the Court of St James. A message of good wishes from H.M. King Mohammed VI was delivered by H.E. Andre Azoulay.

The exhibition shows the close relationship between Jews and Muslims under the inspiration of the Alaouite Monarchs and the positive relations between Muslims, Christians and Jews in Morocco. It was initiated by Rickie Burman, director of the Museum, along with Sydney Assor, member of the 3FF Advisory Board and Chairman of the Association of Moroccan Jews.
