On 2nd September, we launched ParliaMentors 2014/15 with a networking breakfast in Portcullis House, Parliament. As well as new students, alumni, MP mentors, partners and educational professionals, we were privileged to be joined by Ed Miliband MP, Leader of the Labour Party. He paid tribute to the programme and welcomed the new students in this short speech.

‘Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you very much.

Can I just say welcome to Parliament. I believe you are all beginning your year with the Three Faiths Forum. I want to wish you all the very best luck.

With that, Parliament is a slightly odd place at various moments, even after having nearly been here for 10 years. It has its qualities but I think it’s a huge opportunity for you. I want to pay tribute to the Three Faiths Forum for this initiative. I now believe it’s in its 7th or 8th year and I think it is very very important. It is a great badge of honour for you that you are part of it. That’s that first thing I wanted to say.

Secondly, why is this important? Why is it such an important project and why is the work Three Faiths Forum does important? Because as we know from events this summer, as we know from our history, we live in a complex world, we live in a difficult world, and I believe that we live in a world that would be a better world with understanding, with enlightenment, with a sense of different people’s backgrounds. I think the biggest barriers we face in our world are ignorance and actually understanding the cultures of others. Understanding the faiths of others. Understanding those with no faith and a faith. I think it’s incredibly important to the future of our world and that’s why I think it’s so important that the Three Faiths Forum brings together young people to do that.

The last thing I’ll say is I really look forward to hearing the results of your project with your parliamentarians. Because I know that from past years they have been very very important on a whole range of issues.

So I think this is a huge opportunity for you, I think it’s a huge opportunity for us as parliamentarians and I wish you all the very best on embarking on your project.’
