Throwback at Last Year’s Awards
Last year’s awards were held on 26th November 2024 at the Royal Society of Medicine, celebrating the incredible work of London’s faith and belief communities. There were 39 winning projects, 49 recognised projects, and 7 outstanding individuals spotlighted for their tireless contributions to supporting Londoners with the cost-of-living crisis, promoting sustainability, enhancing health and wellbeing, and fostering inclusion in the city.
The evening was marked by Lord Wajid Khan, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Faith, Communities, and Resettlement, aka The Faith Minister, who delivered an inspiring opening speech. “We saw showcase of excellence of people working across different faiths to promote and build strong communities.” said Lord Khan. “Interfaith is so important – we have seen the power of interfaith in recent years with people coming together to rebuild the walls of a mosque [after violent disorder in summer 2024] and how they helped people get tested and vaccinated during the pandemic.”
Sir Ken Olisa, His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Greater London, also took the stage to highlight the importance of such awards. “This whole evening was deeply deeply humbling – it has become a powerhouse of positivity around faith and belief and community.” Sir Ken remarked.
Among the winners were Project ImpACT Youth Community Kitchen, a grassroots initiative giving young people hands-on experience to cook meals for local food banks and shelters, addressing food insecurity while teaching valuable life skills. Ilays, an organisation that advocates for and supports BAME communities and newcomers in West London, was recognized for its work providing vital resources to those facing financial hardship. The Hopscotch Women’s Centre was also honoured for its ongoing support of Afghan women and refugees, providing education, counselling, and social services to help them integrate and thrive in their new communities.
Some of the outstanding individuals that were spotlighted included Salma Quaiyum, who was recognized as an outstanding individual for her leadership and tireless work in promoting mental and physical wellbeing for Muslim women through initiatives like Positive Minds and Nordic Walking in Redbridge.
Stuart Diamond, the CEO of Mitzvah Day, was also celebrated for his leadership in creating one of the largest community volunteer networks, engaging thousands of people across the globe to perform acts of kindness and community service.
Individuals and projects like the above are emblematic of the spirit of the London Dangoor Awards, showcasing the immense positive impact being made by Londoners working together across faith and belief boundaries.
